Founders Day
Celebrating more than 180 years of remembering the people, values and traditions that shaped 91制片厂.
Each year, 91制片厂 celebrates Founders Day on or near October 13, the birthday of founder John Baldwin. More than a commemorative event, Founders Day is one of 91制片厂's oldest traditions, bringing together generations of students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends to reflect on the University's history and recognize those whose dedication has helped shape Baldwin Wallace for more than 180 years.
Founders Day Today
While Founders Day has evolved over the decades, its purpose remains unchanged: to celebrate the people, values and traditions that define 91制片厂.
One of the most meaningful modern traditions is the recognition of individuals whose service and dedication have shaped the Baldwin Wallace community. In years past, the University honored a select few individuals posthumously each year. Today, multiple honorees may be recognized annually, including those honored posthumously as well as current and former faculty, staff, trustees and alumni whose contributions have made a lasting impact on 91制片厂. Like founder John Baldwin, they exemplify a strong work ethic, a spirit of service and a commitment to helping students succeed.
Modern observances have included gatherings of emeriti faculty and staff, commemorative programs and opportunities to honor those whose contributions have made a lasting impact on the University community. Regardless of format, one tradition remains constant: the laying of wreaths at the graves of 91制片厂 founder John Baldwin and 91制片厂's fifth president, A.B. Bonds, both of whom are buried at Woodvale Cemetery in Middleburg Heights.
Founders Day continues to connect 91制片厂's past, present and future while reminding each generation of the legacy it inherits and helps create.
More Than 150 Years of Tradition
Historical records show that Founders Day appeared in the College Catalog of 1870-71, the earliest documented reference to the tradition discovered in University archives. Although the precise origins of the celebration remain unknown, Founders Day has been observed on or near October 13 for generations in honor of John Baldwin's birthday and enduring legacy.
For more than 150 years, the observance has brought together students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends to reflect on 91制片厂's history and the people who shaped its future. Historical accounts describe Founders Day as a "festival of memory" dedicated to recalling the events, ideals and individuals that helped create and sustain the institution.
Over time, the tradition expanded to include assemblies, distinguished speakers, academic ceremonies, building dedications and other significant campus milestones. Beginning in 1945, many influential members of the 91制片厂 community were also commemorated on the Memorial Wall behind North Hall and Findley Hall, creating a lasting tribute to their service and impact.
Remembering John Baldwin
Founders Day honors the legacy of John Baldwin (1799-1884), whose vision, leadership and generosity helped establish Baldwin Wallace in 1845. Historical accounts describe the day as an opportunity to reflect on Baldwin's commitment to expanding educational opportunity and creating an institution that would serve future generations.
Over the years, Founders Day has also recognized the many educators, trustees, benefactors, staff members and alumni who followed in Baldwin's footsteps, contributing their time, talents and resources to strengthen the University and advance its mission.
